What is Colorist Foundry?

Colorist Foundry is an upcoming community of colorists and creatives interested in building better colors pipelines future cinema. The main goal here is to understand how our hindsight’s from our rich cinematic history of film combined with our discoveries in domain of human visuals systems shape our current color systems and lend us foresights into building better tools for the future.

Origin

Growing up in remote parts Global South, I noticed works from west had a distinct visual quality compared to local productions. What I initially couldn’t articulate was the difference in color, texture, and overall image feel. As I developed a deeper understanding of film color systems, the local film industry had largely transitioned away from film stock. About ten years ago, I found myself advocating for film when many around me believed digital had completely taken over (eventually it did).

My perspective has often been that of an outsider looking in, navigating color systems online and occasionally glimpsing post-production processes in my region. These experiences offered insights into the craft, but I always felt there was more to learn from those closer to the film vs. digital debate. Colorist Foundry represents my exploration of color systems: their development, how historical approaches influence current tools, and where the field is heading for both creative and technical professionals. It’s my attempt to connect my early observations with my current understanding of this dynamic field.
