The Contrast control increases or decreases the perceived difference between dark and light areas in the picture. It’s designed to preserve smooth highlight rolloff and shadow transitions, avoiding harsh breakpoints or crushed blacks. Unlike traditional contrast tools that often apply uniform curves, this contrast adapts contextually to the content of the picture. Put simply, this lets you add punch or softness to the picture without making it feel digitally forced or overly harsh.
