Core Look Development

This step includes five primary controls used to adjust the core characteristics of the picture:

  • Exposure
  • Temperature
  • Tint
  • Contrast
  • Saturation

These controls are implemented using a mathematical model that differs from standard color correction tools such as those found in DaVinci Resolve. They are intended to operate within the architecture of a film-style image pipeline, and are not based on linear adjustments.

Behavior and Intent

Unlike traditional adjustments, which operate on raw sensor data or logarithmic values, these controls are shaped to function within the color and tonal structure defined by the film look model applied in previous steps. This means:

  • Adjustments are non-linear and respond differently depending on image context.
  • Controls are aware of film emulation constraints, helping to avoid tonal or color distortions common with conventional tools.
  • The goal is not to replicate in-camera behavior or simulate physical lens or sensor shifts, but to manipulate the image within the bounds of the established look.

Note: These controls are adaptive and optimized to reduce artifacts that can occur when traditional correction tools are applied over a film emulation layer. Their role is to allow for picture shaping without breaking the filmic response introduced in prior steps.
